Have you asked someone how they are recently? If not, what are you waiting for?? Don’t wait any further, talk to someone or make yourself available for someone to talk to you.
May is Mental Health Awareness month. We want to bring Mental Health into the frontline this month. It does not mean that we do not recognise that people are struggling with their mental health at other times of the year but May is the designated month when we consciously put time aside to focus on our mental health and the mental health of others.
We all go through low periods and seasons when we are not at our best. Sometimes it might be one thing and other times it might be several things that gets us down.
The important thing is not to stay down but to rise up.
How can we rise up in the face of constant knock down? Or thoughts that bring us down.
I will share with you what I do which might work for you or it might not.
Here are a few tips:
Have a conversation with God
Don’t be put off by the sub heading if you do not believe in God. Let me first of all say that I am a strong believer in God. If it was not for Him giving me the strength to carry on after the traumatic loss of Marley I would not have been able to do the things I have done. I am aware that not everyone has a faith or believe that God is real and He wants us to have a relationship with him. There are others who have faith and believe that God is real but they still find it hard to have a conversation with God. I have learnt especially in my low moments that God is right there and I can talk to Him. I talk to Him about everything that’s on my mind. And after speaking to Him I listen also to hear what He is saying. I remember a time when I was looking out of the window and seeing the leaves sway on the trees. And I felt this impression on me that we don’t see the wind but we see its impact and God was saying to me it’s the same with trusting and believing in God. We don’t see God with our natural eyes but we can feel the impact of Him. Try talking to God today, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Talk to Someone
It is important to have people around you that you can open up to. Sometimes we think that people don’t want to hear what we have to say but I think we are in an age now where most people are aware of how important it is to give a listening ear to those around us. I am really blessed that I have really good people around me, friends, and family who I can speak to about how I am feeling and they will also take the time to listen and not judge but just allow me to let it all out. Also being there for someone, can also help you. I have said this before in my other posts that when we take some time out to listen and be there for another person who is struggling we are surprised how therapeutic this is for us.
Bring to mind good times
I will not lie to you just this past week I had to put into practice what I preach. If you have read my books you will know that I lost my youngest son Marley to death by suicide. It is not easy for me when other children who were born in the same year or five or six months after his birth are getting to significant milestones. More recently it is the 21st birthday milestone. It is not that I am not happy for them, no, far from it. It is a trigger as it reminds me that Marley did not live to celebrate his 21st birthday. How do I overcome the sad and negative thoughts that tries to overwhelm me? I think about the lovely times we had. The other significant milestones we celebrated. Celebrating his 1st, 5th, 10th, 13th, 15th, 16th, and 18th birthdays are still good memories to focus on and I try not to focus on what could have been. I am also thankful that I got to have those celebrations with him as there are other mothers who did not even get that.
Being at one with God’s Creation
I love being outside. I am fortunate to have a garden where I can sit and look at the trees or see the blue sky on a nice sunny day. On other occasions I go on a walk with some of my friends from church and we get lost in the beauty of the fields. No cars or manmade things just God’s creation and it can be really refreshing. When it’s a warm day and you sit outside and feel the warmth of the sun and the freshness of the wind in your face.
I hope this helps you, feel free to share your tips with me. I would love to hear from you.
